Acupuncture is the stimulation of the specific acupoints along the skin of the body involving various methods such as the application of heat, pressure, and more commonly used penetration of thin needles. It is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine, which aims to treat a range of conditions. According to traditional Chinese medicine, stimulating specific acupuncture points corrects imbalances in the flow of Qi (means energy) through channels known as meridians.
The precise start date that acupuncture was generally held to have originated in ancient China and how it evolved from early times are uncertain. Traditional Chinese religion attributes the introduction of acupuncture to the god Shennong. Hieroglyphics and pictographs have been found dating from the Shang Dynasty 1600-1100 BCE.
